This new year, the award winning Highcliffe Charity Players return to the Regent Centre, Christchurch, with the traditional favourite, Sleeping Beauty, a panto they haven’t performed for over a decade. This ‘one-act pantomime of your dreams’ by Tom Whalley. runs for seven performances from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th January 2022 and, as usual, profits will go to local charities.
Says HCP Chairman, Georgina Smith: “We have chosen Tom Whalley’s one-act version of Sleeping Beauty as it both captures the magic of this much-loved fairy tale and offers a handful of hilarious modern twists combined with some side-splitting comedy. Also, our resident writer, Stephen Hutt (who wrote our 50th anniversary panto Treasure Island in July) has cleverly worked in some topicallocal references, to hopefully create the perfect HCP pantomime for our audiences to enjoy.”
The story unfolds with Princess Beauty’s christening – the perfect day until the wicked fairy Carabosse arrives uninvited. In revenge he casts a spell that the Princess will prick her finger on a spinning wheeland die by her 21st birthday. Though unable to break this evil magic, the good Fairy sends the Princess to sleep for a100 years. Can an heroic Prince save the day? Perhaps a true love’s kiss is the answer?
Says Matthew Smith returning to direct: “Charity Players has just clocked up 50 years and I feel so proud that the Company, co-founded by my father, has continued to delight panto-goers over generations, while raising thousands of pounds forcharity. Sleeping Beauty is one of the classic favourites and our panto as ever, is packed with songs, laughter and romance. We also have a great cast, so this should be a treat for the whole family.” Sleeping Beauty runs at the Regent Centre for seven performances, from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th January 2022, including two matinees and two late afternoon performances.
